The Soweto Festival Expo, Soweto’s largest annual social event that was organised by Adele Lucas Promotions, is testament to how Soweto is fast becoming one of South Africa’s leading destination brands.

This year the festival was attended by a record    30 000 visitors at the new Joburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, where about 400 small businesses exhibited.

The main aims of the festival expo are to assist small, medium and micro enterprises in Gauteng by providing them with access to new markets and training in small business management; and to create an event that can be enjoyed by the entire community of Soweto as well as the people of Johannesburg and tourists from far and wide.

“The Soweto brand, if I might call it that, is enduring and powerful, but it is also changing,” says managing director of Adele Lucas Promotions, Toby Chance. “Soweto is emerging from its troubled past and presenting a new, progressive face, one that accepts modernity, development and the challenges associated with moving into a new space. As the organisers of the Soweto Festival Expo, greater demands are now placed upon us, as we face up to the expectations of a bigger world and a larger audience.”
